How Swiss fortunes were built

Wealth in CHF millions, 2026 · Source: Bilanz 24/2026 (print clipping)

Bilanz gives wealth as a range. In 2020 the Bertarelli family led the canton at CHF 12–13 billion. By 2026 the regional newspaper Der Bund reported Bilanz putting Ernesto Bertarelli, living in Gstaad, at CHF 17 billion. Read the 2023 article (PDF).

Rankings use Forbes’ 2026 estimates in US dollars. Bilanz, the Swiss magazine, publishes a separate annual list of the 300 richest residents in Swiss francs: its 2025 edition puts their combined wealth at CHF 851.5 billion. Tied fortunes share a rank. Estimates move with markets and are not audited.

    Methodology

The Swiss Rich List by Springer is a periodic, evidence-based snapshot of Switzerland’s billionaires, not a live tracker. Each figure is the most recent published estimate (Forbes in US dollars, Bilanz in Swiss francs) and is not adjusted for market movement between editions. Springer does not value any fortune itself: it reports and reconciles published estimates, cross-checking company reports, offshore and corporate registers and open-source records. Ties share a rank and skip the next. A newer Forbes figure appears as “Latest Forbes” while the ranked value stays the 2023 estimate. Cantonal tables use Bilanz’s published ranges, with bars scaled to the midpoint. Every figure links to its source; a dashed “single source” tag means only the Forbes list backs that entry. A journalistic compilation, not an audited register. Information only; not financial, legal or tax advice. Read the full methodology
